Tottenham loses appeal: Bentancur's ban remains!
Tottenham Hotspur suffers a bitter setback: Bentancur remains banned for racist remarks!
A shock for Spurs! The English Football Association has rejected Tottenham's appeal against Rodrigo Bentancur's seven-match ban. The Uruguayan midfielder caused a stir with an insulting remark about South Koreans, which referred to his teammate Son Heung-min.
On Tuesday it was announced that the appeal hearing was not in the club's favour. The penalty remains in place and the reasons for this decision will be published soon. Bentancur has already missed five games at home and abroad and will also miss the crucial EFL Cup quarter-final game against Manchester United on Thursday and the Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday.
The spicy statement
The controversy began when Bentancur was asked about a Tottenham player's shirt on a Uruguayan television program in June. When asked if he wanted that from Son Heung-min, he replied: "Sonny's? It could also be Son's cousin's because "more or less they are all the same."
This remark caused a storm of indignation! Bentancur later apologized to Son on Instagram, calling his comment a “very bad joke.” Son accepted the apology, but the consequences for Bentancur were inevitable.
The Commission's decision
The independent commission that investigated the case found that Bentancur meant his comments as "sarcastic and a gentle rebuke" to the journalist who had referred to Son as "the Korean." Nevertheless, the commission concluded that Bentancur's conduct was "manifestly offensive and hurtful" and must be considered misconduct.
Most notably, the Commission also took into account that Bentancur did not intend to offend Son or anyone else. Nevertheless, he is fined $126,000, underscoring the seriousness of his offense.
Tottenham fans are disappointed and the debate about racism in football is heating up again. How will this incident affect the team? The coming games will be crucial!
