Espanyol turns against Atlético Madrid: drama in LaLiga!
In an exciting start to the new LaLiga season, Atlético Madrid suffered a bitter defeat on August 17, 2025. In an away game against Espanyol Barcelona, the Madrilenians lost 2-1. Julian Álvarez first took the lead in the 37th minute when he was able to overcome the Espanyol defense with a precise free kick from 25 meters. Álvarez was also unlucky in the second half when his shot hit the woodwork and wasted the chance to potentially increase the lead.
However, Espanyol fought their way back into the game and equalized in the 73rd minute through Miguel Rubio, who converted a cross. The decision came in the 84th minute when Pere Milla scored the winning goal for Espanyol with a header. It was an unfortunate start to the season for Atlético, while Espanyol celebrated an important home win.

In other first round games, Athletic Bilbao recorded a thrilling 3-2 win against Sevilla FC. Nico Williams gave Bilbao the lead with a penalty in the 36th minute. Sannadi increased the score to 2-0 before the break. However, Sevilla didn't give up and equalized in the second half with two goals from Lukebakio (60th) and Agoumé (72nd). Nevertheless, it was Navarro who scored the winning goal for Bilbao in the 81st minute. Getafe also secured a 2-0 win against Celta Vigo in the parallel game.
A look at the history of the club
Athletic Club de Madrid, as Atlético Madrid was originally called, was founded on April 26, 1903. The beginnings of Madrid lace were inextricably linked to traditional Basque roots. In its early years the club enjoyed some success, winning important competitions such as the Campeonato del Centro and becoming finalist in the Copa del Rey in 1921 and 1926. In 1939 there was a merger with Aviación Nacional, which led to the renaming to Atlético Aviación de Madrid, and in 1940 the first La Liga title was won.
The “Simeone Revolution” from 2011 brought new successes to the club. Under coach Diego Simeone, Atlético Madrid experienced a remarkable revival, culminating in La Liga titles and significant European success, among other achievements. Performance in recent years has established the club as one of the stronger forces in Spanish football. Despite the current defeat, Atlético remains a historic club with a promising future.
The positive developments in football contrast with social challenges, such as those captured in reporting on homelessness in Los Angeles. RAND researchers have found that while homelessness rates have fallen in certain neighborhoods, the severity of living conditions for those remaining affected has increased. This requires new strategies to support and integrate affected people, which points to the far-reaching influence of trends across society.
