Fair Kick” tournament: Konradsheim celebrates fair play in Melk Abbey!

On March 22, 2025, the eagerly awaited “Fair Kick” tournament took place in Melk Abbey, in which 26 teams from the Waldviertel and Mostviertel fought for the best places. The event, which was organized by volunteers from the diocesan sports community and the Waldviertel youth pastoral, was intended to convey the fun of football as well as the values of fairness and community. The Krems “sports priest” Franz Richter blessed the participating athletes at the beginning, while Abbot Georg Wilfinger was present as a prominent guest. Almost 300 participants, including numerous girls and relatives, contributed to the festive atmosphere.

The nomination of the fairest players and teams was a central theme of the tournament. The parish of Konradsheim surprisingly took first place in the “Fair Play” ranking together with the parish of Oberndorf. In the older category, the Purgstall parish prevailed and won the competition. The team from St. Georgen/Klaus took second place in this category. In the younger age group, the minis from Krems-St. Veit collect the most points and be celebrated as the winner. This result illustrates the outstanding achievements of the young altar boys and girls from the Melk district, who stood out in the games through fair play and team spirit.

Valuable lessons through fair play

Fair play is not just a sporting concept, but an important attitude to life. According to the Canadian Olympic Association, it is about treating yourself, others and the environment with respect and care. Events like the “Fair Kick” tournament offer an excellent platform to convey and live these values. The importance of fair play extends beyond sport and also promotes social interaction in society.

In order to develop a deeper understanding of fairness, it is important to also address behavior and reflect on fair and unfair behavior. Parents and teachers play a crucial role as role models. Materials on sport and fair play can help to integrate and enliven these topics in school lessons and in leisure time. The positive experiences from primary schools show that such tournaments offer an excellent learning environment and can include all genders equally.
