New professor in Jena: microbe researcher with international background!

At the beginning of 2025, Sarela García-Santarina took up her position as the new professor at Leibniz-Hki and the University of Jena. It leads the newly founded department for deep microbiome metabolomics, which deals intensively with the complex metabolic processes of microorganisms and examines their influence on medicinal ingredients.

A central goal of their research is to understand how the human intestinal microbioma influences the effectiveness of medication. García-Santarina, which comes from Spain, was appointed as part of a joint appeal procedure. Your certificate of appointment presented Prof. Dr. Karina Weichold on January 7th.

academic career

Sarela García-Santarina can look back on an impressive academic career. She completed her chemistry studies in Spain, followed by a master in molecular biology in London and a doctoral thesis in biomedicine in Spain. After a first postdoc phase in Durham, USA, she continued her research in a second postdoc phase at the EMBL in Heidelberg. Before moving to Jena, she already headed her own research group in Portugal.

Research on the Leibniz HKI is intended to provide knowledge about the metabolism of new active ingredients for medication development. Among other things, a collaboration with the Jena Excellence Cluster Balance of the Microverses and experts in bioinformatics is planned. For scientific inquiries, Dr. Michael Ramm available.
