Eric Dane is fighting ALS – despite his diagnosis, he remains a TV star!
The American actor Eric Dane, known from the series “Grey’s Anatomy”, gave his viewers and fans stressful news in an interview with “People” magazine. The 52-year-old revealed that he has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This neurodegenerative disease leads to a progressive loss of muscle control and represents an enormous challenge for those affected and their relatives. “Krone” reports that he feels great gratitude for his family’s support during this difficult time.
Dane has signaled that he wants to continue working on the third season of the HBO series “Euphoria” despite the difficult diagnosis. Filming will begin next week. The actor, who rose to fame as "McSexy" on "Grey's Anatomy" and currently portrays Cal Jacobs on "Euphoria," has requested privacy for himself and his family as they navigate this difficult time together.
Background to the disease ALS
ALS is an incurable disease whose course is usually unpredictable. While some sufferers may live for several years, in many cases the disease causes death within two to five years. Information and support for those affected by ALS is available, among other things German Society for Muscular Patients (DGM). This organization aims to improve the living situation of those affected and their relatives and to pool information.
The DGM organizes regional discussion groups in which those affected can exchange their experiences and receive individual advice on various topics relating to life with ALS. An ALS forum also offers an open exchange for those affected and their relatives. Full-time advisory services provide support in questions regarding social law claims, rehabilitation and the provision of medical aids. The DGM also provides information material on ALS and other neuromuscular diseases to promote education and support.
Family relationships and personal circumstances
Eric Dane has been married to actress Rebecca Gayheart since 2004 and the couple have two daughters, Billie (15) and Georgia (13). Last month it was announced that they had called off their divorce. This news comes at a time when the family needs increased support to deal with the difficult reality of an ALS diagnosis.
The DGM is not only committed to supporting those affected, but also to political advocacy for equality and inclusion of people with muscular diseases. The aim is to improve the care of people with ALS worldwide through international networking and cooperation. The DGM is a member of the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations, founded in 1992 to increase public awareness of the disease and support significant advances in research.
