Richard Dindo: On the trail of Switzerland's little rebels

The film world has noted with deep sadness the death of the Swiss director Richard Dindo, who is considered an important representative of the New Swiss Film. Dindo, born in Zurich in 1944, leaves behind an impressive legacy of documentaries that not only entertain but also provoke thought. His film “The Shooting of the Traitor Ernst S.” became particularly well-known. (1975), which critically examines Switzerland and its role in the Second World War. This work questioned Switzerland's self-perception and led to heated controversy, as the Federal Council described it as manipulative and refused to pay out the awarded quality bonus SRF reported.

Dindo transcended the boundaries of filmmaking and combined art with political engagement. Inspired by the '68 movement, his work often focused on themes of injustice and resistance, including portraits of famous revolutionaries and so-called "little rebels." His film “Dani, Michi, Renato & Max” (1987) tells the tragic story of four young activists who fought for an autonomous youth center and tragically died. The little rebels were just as important to Dindo as the great figures of history, which is what the Small newspaper showed.

A life for memories

His films are political and historical in nature, often demanding reflection on social conventions. “The art of storytelling, the philosophy of memory, the beauty of language” were always important to Dindo, which is why he saw himself as a documentarian and not just a feature film director. His work continues to be seen as a key work for the critical examination of Swiss identity. Dealing with themes such as treason and rebellion will shape Dindo's legacy and his pursuit of truth and justice in art will not be forgotten.
