Bat Day in Vienna: A celebration for young and old on Strauss's birthday!

On April 5, 2025, the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna will be the center of celebrations surrounding the 151st birthday of Johann Strauss' famous operetta “Die Fledermaus”. As part of the so-called Bat Day, visitors can expect an extensive program that is specially designed for a broad audience, especially children and families. The program includes, among other things, face painting and a wheel of fortune in the MQ courtyard, a special “bat run” for children aged three to six as part of the Vienna City Marathon and a craft activity called “Tricky Strauss” in the ZOOM Children’s Museum. In addition, performances will take place at JUNGLE WIEN, including performances on topics such as echolocation and dance.

A musical highlight

A special highlight of the day is the Janoska Ensemble, which will interpret “Die Fledermaus” with the renowned star guest Daniela Fally. For nature-loving visitors there is a biodiversity show by Dominik Eulberg. The day ends with the audiovisual projection “In the Beat of Time” by MODULUX, which can be experienced at 9:30 p.m., followed by the Bat Rave with Dominik Eulberg in Hall E.

In addition, further events are planned as part of Johann Strauss 2025, including the theater performance “Villa Orlofsky” in the Volkstheater. The Johann Strauss 2025 Vienna initiative also takes care of nature conservation and sponsors the flying foxes in Schönbrunn Zoo.

A wide range of events

The year 2025 marks a special occasion as it marks the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss's birth. In connection with this, the City of Vienna is planning an extensive cultural program that includes over 65 productions and three exhibitions that take place at 69 different locations. The spectrum of these events ranges from classical concerts to non-classical performances, operettas, theater performances, dance, circus, installations, exhibitions, film and science. These initiatives are divided into three program pillars, highlighting the diversity and cultural richness of the celebrations.
