On May 24, 2025, a head-on accident occurred on the L200 in the gallery between Reuthe and Mellau at around 3:20 p.m. As 5min.at reports, three vehicles were involved. These accidents can have serious consequences, but in this case surprisingly there were no injuries.

The incident was caused by a traffic backup in the tunnel. A 60-year-old man had to slow down due to the traffic jam. The 43-year-old man driving behind him was unable to react in time and hit the rear of the first vehicle mentioned. As a result, there was a collision with the oncoming car driven by a 69-year-old woman.

Consequences of the accident and emergency services

As a result of the collision, the 43-year-old man's vehicle and the 69-year-old woman's vehicle were significantly damaged and had to be towed away. The 60-year-old man's vehicle remained drivable, but had damage to the rear area. The L200 was closed in the area of the accident site for about an hour. The Reuthe fire department was on site with two vehicles and ten emergency services as well as two police patrols.

Such accidents are recorded systematically in Austria. According to statistics.at, road traffic accidents with personal injuries are recorded electronically by police authorities. This data is transmitted daily to Statistics Austria to ensure continuous monitoring of accident events. The aim of this recording is to create a reliable basis for accident research and prevention.

Statistical basics

Comprehensive statistics on road traffic accidents resulting in personal injury have been compiled and published by Statistics Austria since 1961. The latest results were published in June 2023 and provide detailed insights into accident developments in Austria. The basis for this is the Road Traffic Accident Statistics Act and the Ordinance on the Statistical Recording of Road Traffic Accidents Involving Personal Injuries. According to statistics.at, the regular publication of the results is crucial for the development and evaluation of the Austrian traffic safety program.

In order to understand the complexity of the accident situation, the types of traffic involved in the accident and the person structure are analyzed. These detailed analyzes are necessary to support safety-promoting measures in transport policy.

The incident on the L200 not only has a direct impact on the people involved, but is also in the context of the extensive statistical surveys and analyzes that contribute to improving road safety.
