Spectacular eagle owl rescue: Fire brigade frees huge bird from chimney!
In Altmünster, Gmunden district, there was a spectacular rescue operation on Tuesday evening when the volunteer fire department freed an eagle owl from the chimney of a single-family home. The homeowners had previously noticed a strange rustling coming from the chimney pipe and alerted the fire department, who quickly arrived on the scene. Through a small maintenance door in the chimney, the emergency services discovered the trapped bird, which was unable to free itself, and called the Upper Austria Animal Rescue from Lindach to assist.
However, the rescue turned out to be tricky. Fire brigade commander Christian Gruber emphasized the need not to cause additional stress or injury to the eagle owl, which is why a veterinarian was involved in the rescue planning. After several failed attempts to carefully guide the bird upwards, the forces were forced to enlarge the opening in the chimney door using special tools.
Elaborate rescue operation
The entire rescue operation lasted nearly two hours. Finally, the emergency services managed to catch the bird of prey, which weighed around ten kilograms, and put it in a transport cage. Fortunately, the eagle owl only suffered minor injuries, but was clearly exhausted from his adventure in the chimney.
After being freed, the eagle owl was taken to the Aurachtal wildlife station, where it received the necessary care. Gabi Kaar and her team look after the bird, which recovered quickly. Current feedback confirms that the eagle owl is already eating again and should be released into the wild after full recovery.
This rescue operation not only shows the commitment of the fire department and animal rescue, but also the challenges that the rescuers faced in such situations. The idea of a bird as majestic as the eagle owl ending up in such a predicament might surprise many people.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the two organizations, a promising end for the bird was secured. Experience has shown how important it is to remain calm in difficult situations and to find the best possible solution for the animals affected.
