On New Year's Eve 2024/25 there was a massive police operation in Munich when around 300 people rioted at the Wittelsbacher Bridge. That incident, which began around 12:20 a.m., ended with five police officers injured and several arrests. According to reports from Mercury and South German newspaper The group was partially masked and deliberately threw firecrackers and glass bottles at the emergency services.
The police responded to the riots with an increased deployment, with several platoons of 20 to 25 officers being called in. The Wittelsbacher Bridge, where the riots occurred, was closed until 2:30 a.m. while the police cleaned the road of debris and broken glass. A total of four rioters were arrested and investigations were initiated against them for serious breach of the peace, attempted grievous bodily harm and physical assault on law enforcement officers. Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann praised the police for their quick and efficient deployment and described the attacks as unacceptable.
Injuries and property damage
The police officers' injuries included, among other things, blast trauma and minor burning of facial hair. The aggressive atmosphere was particularly noticeable, with several Christmas trees being set on fire before the fire brigade could intervene. On New Year's Eve, the Munich police had a total of 710 operations, which represents an increase compared to the previous year, when there were 540 operations. Most calls involved pyrotechnics, fires and bodily harm crimes, while the fire department recorded three serious injuries to children caused by pyrotechnics.
Special incidents that night also included an incident at Odeonsplatz, where a 19-year-old injured an officer with a blank pistol. In Pasing, police officers were fired at with fireworks while trying to prevent Israeli flags from being burned. The situation at other celebration locations was also tense, for example around 6,000 people were registered at Marienplatz around midnight, while the police confiscated banned pyrotechnics there.
