Car in Datteln is on fire – gas tank valve fails!
In the early morning of December 23rd, 2025 there was a spectacular car fire in Datteln. As early as 4:20 a.m., the fire department reported a burning car that was running on autogas (LPG). When the first emergency services arrived, the report was confirmed: the car was fully on fire. Operations managers immediately initiated extinguishing measures and secured a large area of the site. The fire department had to use a water cannon to extinguish the fire as the fire quickly spread. Despite the quick measures, the car burned down completely. Luckily there were no injuries.
In total, several fire brigade vehicles were required. These included an emergency fire fighting vehicle (HLF), a turntable ladder with a basket (DLK), a tank fire engine (TLF) and an ambulance (RTW). Police were also on site to support the situation and ensure public safety during the operation. The fire was probably caused by a defect in the gas tank's safety valve, which released excess pressure and thus led to the formation of flames.
Background information on the fire hazard of vehicles
The risk of fire in vehicles is a risk that should not be underestimated. A survey by Statista shows that different types of propulsion have different fire risks. In particular, vehicles that run on LPG have repeatedly come into focus in the past, especially as fire-related complaints have increased recently. These incidents not only cause a lot of damage, but also pose a danger to emergency services, who must act immediately in the event of a fire.
Further investigations into the fire risk of cars have shown that technical defects are often cited as the cause of such incidents. This is also confirmed by a case in Wachtberg-Gimmersdorf, where a car fire was caused by a technical defect. The engine compartment of a car was reported to be completely on fire and the fire department was able to quickly implement initial measures to prevent anything worse from happening. In this case, no injuries were recorded either.
The incidents in Datteln and Wachtberg illustrate the importance of preventative measures to check vehicle technology. Drivers should be aware of the dangers and have regular maintenance performed to prevent potential fires. In both cases, the fire brigade reacted professionally and prevented anything worse from happening.
