A dramatic accident occurred in Wörnharts today when a tanker truck left the road and overturned. According to initial reports, the incident happened at 11:26 a.m. Fortunately, the driver was able to escape from the cab on his own and was then taken to hospital. During the accident, diesel leaked from the tank, resulting in a significant safety incident ORF reported.
The fire department and police were quickly on the scene. Six firefighters secured the scene of the accident, set up fire protection and regulated traffic. To combat the spilled oil and diesel, a special folding bag was used, while a 30cm high earth bank was built in the road ditch to prevent further spillage of resources, such as the Gmünd fire department reported.
Rescue operations and recovery
The recovery of the truck turned out to be a complex operation. A mobile crane from Engelstein was called in to free the vehicle from the unfortunate situation using a cable winch. The road between Wörnharts and the Sandige Au intersection was closed to traffic throughout the rescue work. The police and Red Cross from the area were also deployed, optimizing their cooperation in order to bring the situation under control as quickly as possible.
Finally, the rescue was successfully completed at 2:15 p.m. and the emergency services restored operational readiness. While the Water Conservation Authority was monitoring the incident, it was unclear whether further action would need to be taken due to the pollutant release. Preparations are now underway to completely clear the equipment in order to minimize the consequences of this threatening accident.
