Floods in Rostock: Banks under water - no damage reported!

In Rostock, the flooding on January 12, 2025 was lower than previously feared. According to a report by NDR Parking spaces on the Gehlsdorfer Ufer were under water, and the parking lot at the Kaputzenhof ferry was also briefly flooded. Despite the increased water levels, there was no damage to report.

Some boats got into trouble because the owners didn't adjust the lines in time. The harbor authority and the fire department supported the boat owners with lines to defuse the situation. A parking lot in front of a boat club and a playground on Gehlsdorfer Ufer were also affected by the floodwaters. The connecting route between Rövershager Chaussee and Tessiner Straße, which was closed due to flooding, has now been reopened.

Previous flood on February 25th

An earlier flood event in Rostock occurred on February 25, 2023. There, the Warnow overflowed its banks in Gehlsdorf and flooded several streets, reported Baltic Sea newspaper. The fire department and police were alerted because a car parked on the edge of the bank was surrounded by water. This situation occurred around 11 a.m. and meant that guests at a guesthouse on Gehlsdorfer Wellenweg found out about the flooding too late.

The Wellenweg, which was completely under water, was particularly affected, as were parts of the Fährberg. The fire department deployed several officers, two of whom wore waders, and went into the water to secure the vehicle. Although the car was almost up to its wheel arches in water, it was eventually able to be started and reversed. The fire department helped pump out the interior, which was completely submerged. During this time, the Gehlsdorfer Ufer was closed to car and pedestrian traffic, but the situation was expected to ease over the course of the day.
