Major fire in Mörschwil: 53-year-old in hospital, damage running into millions!

On Sunday morning, June 15, 2025, shortly after 9 a.m., there was a major fire in a car repair shop on Rorschacher Straße in Mörschwil, Canton of St. Gallen. The fire alarm was triggered by people in the commercial area. The alarm was raised by the St. Gallen emergency call and operations control center, which then mobilized numerous emergency services. A total of 40 members of the Mörschwil fire department and 30 of the St. Gallen professional fire department were on duty, supported by several patrols and specialists from the St. Gallen cantonal police as well as a rescue service with two ambulances and an operations manager.

The emergency services quickly discovered flames and massive smoke that was visible from afar. Thanks to the rapid and coordinated action of the fire department, the fire was brought under control within about an hour. The flames were no longer visible afterwards, but the damage remained significant. Initial estimates put the figure at several hundred thousand francs, which makes the situation extremely worrying for the businesses affected, as this is a commercial complex.

Injuries and road traffic

A 53-year-old man was taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation. Fortunately, no further injuries were reported. In order not to hinder the extinguishing work, the corresponding section of Rorschacher Straße had to be closed in both directions for several hours. A detour was put in place to direct traffic around the scene.

The St. Gallen public prosecutor's office has commissioned the cantonal police's Forensics Competence Center to investigate the cause of the fire. Such fires often raise questions about safety and the causes of fires. Statistics on fires and fire safety in different regions, such as those from FeuerTrutz, show that preventive measures and regular updates of fire safety guidelines are crucial to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The fire situation in Mörschwil is another example of how important it is to respond to such incidents and implement the necessary safety measures. Fire and smoke can cause significant damage in a short period of time, both financially and to the health of those involved.
