On Monday evening, January 6th, there was a large fire in an apartment building on Schwertstrasse in Krefeld. The fire department received several emergency calls that came into the control center at 10 p.m. The callers reported a fire in a storage building located in the backyard of the home. In addition to garbage cans, various other items were also stored in this warehouse.
The Krefeld fire department reported on Tuesday that fortunately there were no injuries. When the emergency services arrived, the fire had already spread to the facade of the house and to an apartment on the second floor. A massive firefighting effort was immediately initiated, while up to four fire brigade squads were deployed using heavy breathing apparatus.
Smoke and extent of damage
All corridors of the affected apartment building and other apartments were heavily smoked. There were no longer any people in the building at the time of arrival. Nevertheless, the residents who were examined by the emergency doctor were cared for in a bus provided. Five of the six affected apartments were badly damaged, which is why the residents had to temporarily stay with friends or relatives. A total of 75 firefighters from the professional and volunteer fire departments and the rescue service were on site, and the operation lasted around three hours.
The exact circumstances of the fire continue to be investigated by the relevant authorities, as the incident is now also covered by reports from WZ.de receives additional attention.
