Fire devil ignites fire in Hohenems: Fire brigade in constant use!
A serious vegetation fire is currently keeping emergency services on tenterhooks, both in Austria and Croatia. In Vorarlberg, a previously unknown person lit a fire at a forbidden barbecue area, which quickly spread after embers were blown up by strong foehn winds. Loud vorarlberg.orf.at Concerned passers-by noticed the flames and alerted the fire department. Within a very short time, the fire had spread to a length of around 100 meters into an adjacent forest area.
The Hohenems fire department deployed 147 emergency services from eight fire departments as well as mountain rescue services and other emergency responders to fight the inferno. The processes were made more difficult by the difficult weather conditions, as the wind spread the embers further. With the help of a drone and numerous fire engines that transported water from a pond and an elevated tank, the emergency services managed to extinguish the fire after intensive fighting and by transporting around 60,000 liters of water. District fire brigade inspector Martin Kisser described the operation as extremely challenging, especially due to the dryness and strong winds. The fire was finally extinguished at around 1:00 a.m., while a follow-up inspection is scheduled for the next day.
Fire danger in Croatia
Around 450 firefighters were deployed to fight the fire, supported by five firefighting aircraft. The firefighting effort spanned 24 hours, with teams taking turns controlling the flames and protecting areas at risk. Despite the successes so far, the situation remains critical and the police have asked residents to follow the instructions of emergency services and to stay away from the scene of the fire.
