Chaos in the Gärtnerplatztheater: Deluge system triggers at premiere!

On April 10, 2025, an unpleasant incident occurred at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich during the premiere performance. At the event, which took place in front of a sold-out crowd, the deluge extinguishing system was accidentally activated. This happened while an actress was changing costumes in the access corridor to the backstage, where the control panel for the safety equipment is also located Fireworld reported.

Activating the extinguishing system meant that the Iron Curtain's sprinkler system was automatically activated. Normally, this mechanism is only activated in the event of a fire outbreak, which indicated a false activation. Thanks to the quick intervention of the fire safety guard of the Munich fire department, a major water leak was prevented. Nevertheless, the emergency services immediately began removing the extinguishing water that had already escaped.

Efficient fire department response

Thanks to the rapid and well-coordinated action of the fire brigade, the water damage was quickly removed so that the performance could continue after a short interruption. Intendant Josef E. Köpplinger praised the fire department's professional efforts on stage, which was rewarded with applause from the audience. The Technical Directorate also expressed its thanks by telephone for the smooth and well-coordinated cooperation.

All of the Gärtnerplatztheater's safety equipment is currently being checked and repaired by specialist companies. These measures are important to prevent future incidents and ensure safety during events.

Security at events

The importance of safety precautions is also highlighted in the DGUV guideline “Security at events and productions”, which was created by the “Stages and Studios” department. This offers practical implementation of government regulations and accident insurance providers. The guide, which is aimed at entrepreneurs and managers, represents an important link to the applicable technical regulations and provides information about requirements for event and production facilities as well as specific work areas and procedures. These requirements are not only important for safety, but also for the legally compliant implementation of events, as explained on DGUV.
