Lightning strikes residential building: Fire brigade saves Ebersdorf from fire!
On the night of Monday, June 16, 2025, a remarkable incident occurred in Ebersdorf, Styria: At around 3:35 a.m., lightning struck the roof of an apartment building, causing a fire in the room. The Ebersdorf fire department was immediately alerted and deployed with 22 people and several vehicles. At the same time, the Sebersdorf Volunteer Fire Department was called upon to provide support and fought on site with 14 emergency services and various vehicles.
The lightning strike caused significant damage to the roof structure. When a respiratory protection team from the Ebersdorf fire department investigated, it quickly became clear that the fire had already gone out and no people were in danger. However, the roof was so badly damaged that it had to be temporarily covered with tarpaulins.
Operational details and measures
The emergency services from Ebersdorf and Sebersdorf took all necessary measures to stabilize the situation. Two ladder paths were constructed and damaged bricks had to be removed. A light could be dismantled with the sunrise. A total of around 36 emergency services were on site and completed the operation within around two hours. After completing the measures, the fire department members returned to the fire station. The Ilz police and the Hartberg Red Cross also supported the emergency services with additional emergency vehicles and personnel.
There were no injuries, which is not only due to the quick action of the fire brigade, but also to the luck of the residents, who were not in danger at the time. Such lightning-related incidents should not be underestimated. Similar to this case, current studies show that over 200 lightning accidents, some with fatal consequences, are registered in Western Europe every year. According to Deutschlandfunk, many people are often unaware of the danger during thunderstorms and prefer to seek shelter under trees, which is, however, very risky.
In summary, this incident in Ebersdorf highlights the potential dangers of thunderstorms and lightning strikes as well as the importance of a quick response by emergency services. As do Fireworld and Kleine Newspaper report, the security forces were ready to avert such dangers, and the residents were fortunately on the safe side in this case.
