Double bankruptcy in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”: zero euro elimination!

On June 4, 2025, the popular quiz show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” a double disaster. Two candidates, Sophie Schubert from Hamburg and Martina Göbel from Bad Nenndorf, had to leave the show with zero euros in their wallets. Both failed because of questions that they should never have answered incorrectly and thus went down in the show's history books, as it is extremely rare for two candidates to be eliminated in one edition without winning. Vienna.at reported this unusual incident.

Sophie Schubert, a young mother, had prepared intensively for her participation. She became emotional at the first question, which was valued at 200 euros. The question was: “Memorable events come down to what?” However, your answer “Ingalen” was incorrect, the correct answer was “Annalen”. She left the studio almost with tears in her eyes and was reassured by moderator Günther Jauch, who noted that tragic eliminations might be invited back. Berlin courier emphasizes that Jauch used his address to the remaining candidates to advise them to be more careful.

Failure under pressure

The second candidate, Martina Göbel, had a self-confident charisma at the beginning of the show. For the crucial 1000 euro question, which revolved around the classic Monopoly playing field, she chose the answer “main prize” instead of the correct answer “big LOT”. After her mistake, she became emotionally affected and expressed regret, which further added to the drama of the evening.

Both candidates quickly realized that even seemingly simple questions could lead to an abrupt defeat. The show ultimately ended with two total bankruptcies, while the targeted two million euros remained untouched.
