Trump's NATO press conference: fact check of the statements

President Donald Trump made false claims about the war in Ukraine, inflation in the United States and the fight against the terrorist group ISIS during his press conference on Wednesday at the NATO summit in the Netherlands.

False claims about the war in Ukraine

Trump also repeated his baseless claim that US military strikes over the weekend on Iranian nuclear sites had “obliterated” them. According to a CNN report, an early U.S. intelligence assessment found that the program's core components had not been completely destroyed and the attacks would have only set back Iran's nuclear program by months. It is important to note that the US continues to collect information about the impact of the attacks and subsequent assessments may reach different conclusions.

The Ukraine war and Trump's statements

When a journalist reminded Trump that he had previously promised to end Russia's war on Ukraine in "24 hours" but later said that he had meant it sarcastically, Trump said, "Of course it was sarcastic." However, this statement is not true. In April, Trump claimed he made the promise "in jest," but CNN found 53 examples of Trump asserting in a completely serious tone during the campaign that he would end the war either within 24 hours of returning to the White House or even sooner as president-elect.

Inflation in the USA

Trump again criticized Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell for not immediately cutting interest rates. Trump declared, as he did before, that “we don’t have inflation.” However, that is wrong. The U.S. annual inflation rate was 2.4% in May, up from 2.3% in April. That April rate was the lowest since the start of 2021 and was below the expectations of some economists who had predicted a rise following significant new tariffs imposed by Trump. Nevertheless, there can be no talk of “no inflation”.

The fight against ISIS

Trump repeated his usual statement that “we defeated ISIS in a few weeks” during his first term. He added: "I was told it would take four to five years, we did it in a few weeks." In reality, however, the so-called ISIS “caliphate” was only declared fully liberated more than two years after Trump took office in 2019, not in “a few weeks.”
