Schönborn and Lackner: A real peace needs more than just deals!
In an urgent appeal for the end of the Ukraine War, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn and Archbishop Franz Lackner vehemently spoke out against the reduction of peace negotiations to mere "deals". According to Schönborn, who warned in his column in the "today" that peace must be more than a financial business, he emphasizes: "It hurts when peace negotiations become a 'deal': valuable mineral resources in return, but without clear security guarantees." This does not allow the sustainable peace that Ukraine urgently need. Schönborn demands that the rights of the Ukrainian people who suffer from the war must be preserved. Because, as he does it, "without justice and security, it will not be a real peace" ( Kathpress ).
Archbishop Lackner also combined in his criticism of US President Trump's demands to make help for Ukraine dependent on consideration. "A real and just peace is not a mere 'deal'," said Lackner. He emphasizes that peace can only thrive on the basis of justice. The archbishop, who attended Ukraine himself, described the conflict as the "tragedy of humanity" and called for the international actors to respect the self -determination of the Ukrainians. On the third anniversary of the war, he recalled that no peace could be possible for Ukraine ( TAGEPOST ).
