Tanrivermis before moving to NK Maribor: New challenges await!

The Slovenian football club NK Maribor is facing a change in the coaching bench. According to reports from several Slovenian media, Tugberk Tanrivermis, who is currently the coach at SKN St. Pölten, will be his successor. It is currently expected that Tanrivermis will leave St. Pölten on June 30, 2025 and start in Maribor. He has played a total of 19 games with the team since taking over in October 2024.

NK Maribor, currently in second place in the Slovenska Nogometna League, is known as the most successful club in Slovenia. The club has an impressive track record with 16 championships and nine cup wins. Maribor is currently taking part in the qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League, which offers Tanrivermis the opportunity to operate on the international stage.

The challenge in Maribor

Maribor has struggled to qualify for the group stage of an international competition in recent years. The club has been unsuccessful in this area since the 2017/18 season and was eliminated in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League last season. They were previously able to reach the Champions League in 2014/15 and 2017/18, but failed in the group stage both times.

The team will now face Botev Plovdiv in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round on July 18, 2024. In the first leg, Maribor were defeated 2-1, which increased the pressure on the team to shine at their home stadium Ljudski vrt, which has a capacity of 12,702 seats.

Expectations and statistics

In terms of statistics, Maribor have not won a game in their last five meetings against Bulgarian teams, while they have failed to impress in their last eight home games in European qualifiers, failing to score a goal in six of those games. This represents a significant challenge for the new coach. According to Sportskeeda, it is believed that Maribor could draw against Botev as both teams are under pressure.

The club was founded on December 12, 1960 and meets with immense expectations from its fans. President Drago Cotar and head coach Damir Krznar have high hopes that Tanrivermis will bring a breath of fresh air to the team. It remains to be seen how the cooperation will develop and whether Maribor can achieve the much-needed success on the international stage with its new leadership.
