US endangers world order, Ukrainian ambassador warns

Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Valerii Zaluzhnyi recently stated that the United States is “destroying” the current world order. He warned that Russia's next target could be Europe. Zaluzhnyi, who was removed as Ukraine's military chief last year and is now seen as a potential presidential candidate, expressed concern about U.S. efforts to go "halfway" with Russia.

Tensions between the USA and Ukraine

These comments are particularly direct for a sitting ambassador. They come at a time when Ukraine is trying to improve its relations with the US after a problematic meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump. After the heated discussions, the U.S. government halted military aid to Ukraine and halted intelligence cooperation, sparking fears in Kiev that the Trump administration is lining up behind Russia.

Criticism of US politics

“It is not only the Axis of Evil and Russia that want to overhaul the world order, but also the United States that is actually destroying that order,” Zaluzhnyi said on Thursday at a panel at the British think tank Chatham House. He said the US government had "questioned" the unity of the Western world and recounted Trump administration talks with Russia that sidelined Ukraine and Europe.

Questioning the future of NATO

Given current developments, Zaluzhnyi expressed concerns about the future of NATO, emphasizing: “We can say that NATO may also cease to exist in the near future.” He also announced that the US would try to delegate security policy issues to Europe without its involvement. “Now Washington is taking steps towards the Kremlin to accommodate them, which could make Europe the next target for Russia,” he added.

Strengthen Europe's defense capabilities

Zaluzhnyi's words come at a time when Europe urgently needs to expand its defense capabilities. The dramatic shift in U.S. policy under Trump has raised concerns that Europe may no longer be able to count on American support while the threat from Russia remains.

Support for Ukraine

European allies expressed solidarity after the clash between Zelensky and Trump. Zelensky was expelled from the White House as a result of the incident. He has since tried to defuse tensions with the Trump administration, saying the heated meeting "didn't go the way it should have." He called it “regrettable” and stressed that Ukraine was ready to negotiate an end to the conflict.

Urgency of the EU summit in Brussels

Meanwhile, European leaders are gathering for an emergency summit in Brussels on Thursday, where they will reiterate their support for Ukraine and seek a seat at the negotiating table. The showdown between Zelensky and Trump shows the increased tensions and the need for a unified European position.
