Trump's Ukraine Envoy: Kyiv caused US intelligence stop itself
The Trump administration's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia said Thursday that the Ukrainians have to “admit it to themselves” in relation to stopping intelligence information from the USA. Keith Kellogg emphasized this during a discussion moderated by CBS' Margaret Brennan at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Intelligence sharing as a means of pressure
Brennan commented on the impact of the intelligence freeze, saying: "This is a significant concession to Russia that limits Ukraine's ability to attack Russian forces." She added that these pressures are likely to directly influence Ukraine's military operations. Kellogg accused the Ukrainians: “Quite frankly, they have themselves to blame.”
Stop military support
The Trump administration on Wednesday reportedly ordered at least a partial halt to intelligence support helping Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion. In addition, the delivery of military aid to Kiev was stopped, which highlighted the deterioration in relations between the USA and Ukraine. This was also evident in last week's heated exchange in the Oval Office between President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Consequences for Ukraine
The cessation of American military aid could have devastating consequences for Ukraine's military capabilities on the battlefield Civilians in Ukrainian cities making it vulnerable to Russian attacks. Asked what Ukraine needs to do to restore intelligence and the flow of military support, Kellogg pointed to the proposed U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal.
Negotiations and agreements
The seriousness of the situation
At the CFR event, Kellogg further explained that it was not unusual; during his time in Kiev two weeks ago, he had made clear to President Zelensky the possible consequences of a lack of a written agreement: "I was absolutely - I was direct and clear - that this could happen."
A clear signal to Ukraine
When asked about the impact of halting intelligence and military support, Kellogg explained, "The best way to describe it is to compare it to a plank of wood across the snout of a mule to get its attention." He gave another example, comparing it to how his two granddaughters try to get his attention by grabbing his face and saying, "Pop Pop, listen to me."
“We are going to end this war, and this is one way to make sure you understand how serious we are,” Kellogg added Thursday. "Is it hard? Of course, but it's not like they didn't know it was coming. They were given fair warning."
