Microsoft invests 80 billion dollars: USA becomes an AI center!

The USA is about to experience a gigantic investment surge in the technology sector! Microsoft has announced it will invest a staggering $80 billion in fiscal year 2025 to develop new data centers to meet growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI). This mammoth investment will make it possible to train AI models and develop cloud-based applications. The pressure on specialized data centers is increasing, as highlighted by Microsoft Vice President Brad Smith, who emphasizes that the US is currently leading the global AI race, thanks in part to significant investments from companies ranging from start-ups to golfers. According to Microsoft, capital spending is expected to increase by 5.3 percent to $20 billion in the first quarter of 2025 alone, which could drive total capital expenditure for the year to an estimated $85 billion, as OE24 reported.

Great competition in the data center market

But it's not just Microsoft that is showing interest in this booming industry - other heavyweights such as Amazon and Alphabet have already announced massive investments. In 2024, the industry declared a total of $33.5 billion to build new computer farms. Companies like McKinsey note that demand for such data centers could rise to 80 gigawatts (GW) in the US and 35 GW in Europe by 2030. The market potential for AI data centers could therefore be between 2.5 and 3 trillion dollars. However, experts point to increasing energy consumption: the electricity demand of data centers is growing by 17 percent annually, while an increase of 13 percent is forecast in Europe FOCUS reported.

Exciting developments such as the introduction of more efficient cooling technologies, such as liquid cooling, show that the market presents both challenges and opportunities. With a projected growth rate in cooling capital expenditure of approximately 18 percent through 2028, it is clear that the data center industry remains extremely attractive for investors.
