Stop food waste: Actions in Stade for climate protection!

In a dramatic appeal against food waste, the Stade district is launching an exciting initiative! From November 16th to 24th, 2024, the European Waste Reduction Week (EWAV) will be celebrated with the powerful motto “Down to the last crumb – use food carefully”. A shocking 60 million tonnes of food end up in waste in Europe every year, with more than half coming from private households. Each of us throws away an average of 70 kilograms per year! It's high time to change that!

The action week, which is taking place for the 15th time, is a Europe-wide spectacle under the motto "Reduce. Reuse. Recycle." stands. Thousands of actors from business, education and civil society show innovative projects to prevent food waste. Gabriele Mahr, waste consultant for the district, emphasizes: "Preventing food waste is an active contribution to climate protection. We waste too much every day!" She calls on everyone to shop more consciously and to rethink their own consumption of resources.

Promotions and events

During this special week, the students of the vocational schools III in Stade are getting active by raising awareness of the topic by “cooking leftovers”. The waste consultants will also be available with an information stand at the weekly markets in Stade's old town on November 16th and in Buxtehude-Altkloster on November 19th to talk to citizens. All actions are documented on the website www.wochederabfallvermeidung.de.

The entire campaign is coordinated by the Association of Municipal Companies (VKU) and receives support from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection as well as the Federal Environment Agency.
