Greens demand finite solutions: Is the car-free city center coming?
The Greens in downtown Vienna are groaning with impatience! For years they have been striving for a traffic-calmed zone in the inner city, but progress has come to a standstill. Despite the Greens' government responsibility from 2010 to 2020 - during this time, the dream goal of a car-free city center, which former state leader Birgit Hebein proclaimed in 2020, remained unachieved. How krone.at reported that there were feasibility studies and numerous press conferences, but none of the required measures were actually implemented.
The city repeatedly called on ex-transport minister Leonore Gewessler to create a legal basis for the desired traffic calming. Instead, the Greens' words had no consequences. Now Alexander Hirschenhauser, the face of the City Greens, is speaking out and loudly calling for a car-free city center. “We are impatient because there is still discussion instead of action,” said Hirschenhauser. This begs the question: Is this a campaign stunt or simply a diversionary tactic for neglected responsibility? In fact, it remains questionable whether the party has learned from its past.
Urgent measures required
The global climate crisis doesn't leave us indifferent! Loud gruene.at The challenges posed by the war in Europe and the global pandemic are small compared to what we face if the climate crisis is not actively combated. The Greens have been calling for access restrictions in the city center for over a decade as a contribution to climate protection. The appeal is getting louder: less traffic should create more space for plants, trees and green spaces and improve air quality.
The aim is to make Vienna's city center the most livable center in the world - with less traffic, more greenery and solidarity. Time is running out and the people of Vienna are waiting for action rather than just words. It will be exciting to see how the Greens will finally turn their promises into reality!
