Gospel evening in Heidenheim: Heart and soul in the rhythm of the music
On Sunday evening a rousing gospel concert by the Hans Fickelscher Quartet took place in the Christ Church. The event was organized by Jazz Heidenheim and attracted numerous music enthusiasts. The quartet, made up of experienced musicians, presented a varied program that included both gospel and other musical styles.
The Hans Fickelscher Quartet consists of the following members: Hans Fickelscher (percussion), Martin Wiedmann (electric guitar), Jürgen Häußler (tenor saxophone) and Beatrix Steinhübl (singer and pianist). Steinhübl, who leads several gospel choirs in the Stuttgart area, has had experience singing gospel since she was 16 and spent some time in the USA to explore the roots of this form of music.
Sensitive performances and powerful sounds
The concert began with two well-known songs by Whitney Houston before the quartet thrilled the audience with a mixture of gospel, blues as well as rock and soft Latin groove elements. Martin Wiedmann offered a variety of tones on the electric guitar, while Jürgen Häußler played warm, soulful tones on the tenor saxophone. Hans Fickelscher created a complex rhythmic network with various percussion instruments, and Beatrix Steinhübl sang clearly and sensitively.
Particularly noteworthy was the performance of the community song 2147 from Brooklyn, with which Steinhübl underlined the intensity of gospel music in the USA compared to Europe. Although the audience was initially hesitant to actively sing along, the emotional connection grew as the pieces continued, particularly with performances by Harry Belafonte and Ray Charles. The evening ended with enthusiastic applause from the audience, who rewarded the quartet with loud applause and demanded two encores.
Parallel to this event, another musical highlight is expected in the DHBW cafeteria in Heidenheim. On March 7, 2025, the brothers Moritz and Valentin Renner will perform under the name RENNER, accompanied by Nils Kugelmann on bass. This event promises to be as promising as it is jazz-heidenheim.de reported.
