Attention, allergy sufferers: Peanuts discovered in hazelnut cream!
Akar Austria GmbH has launched a recall for the “Gourmet Celebi” hazelnut cream (300 g) because undeclared peanuts were found in the cream. This warning is particularly aimed at people with peanut allergies who could be at risk to their health from consuming the affected product. The affected best-before date is May 8, 2026, as 5min.at reports.
Akar Austria calls on all retailers to immediately remove the affected batches from sale. Consumers should no longer consume the hazelnut cream and should contact the company's sales department directly if they have any further concerns. Akar Austria apologized for the inconvenience caused and emphasized the importance of food safety.
Health risk from unexpected allergens
The recall was initiated due to the detection of traces of peanuts that were not appropriately labeled. Even very small amounts of peanuts can cause serious reactions in people with allergies, which significantly increases the risk for this group of people, as highlighted in a report by heute.at.
In Europe, the Food Information Regulation (Regulation (EU) 1169/2011) requires food manufacturers to label the 14 most common allergens, including peanuts, on their products. However, there is currently no legal regulation for the unintentional introduction of allergens into food, which is the subject of the debate about food allergies. Many manufacturers provide voluntary “trace information”, but these do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the actual amount of allergen in the product, informs the BFR.
