Vienna Climate Tour 2025: Circular economy in the focus of the city!

This year's climate tour in Vienna is all about the circular economy. The tour started today under the motto “Circular Economy” and begins at the 48er Tandler in Donaustadt. Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky opened the event and emphasized the importance of sustainable consumption and the appreciation of everyday objects in order to counteract the throwaway mentality. The initiative aims to help raise awareness of the importance of recycling and avoiding throwaway products.

Particularly noteworthy are the Tandler locations in Donaustadt and Margareten, which act as model models for circular economy. These locations support the old goods logistics in the 48er-Tandler, which serves as a central hub for old goods. Three trucks are used there every day to collect, sort and process old, functional goods. The Tandler II at Percostraße 2 offers a variety of tested electrical appliances, clothing, books, dishes, LPs, CDs and musical instruments. Electrical appliances, for example, are sold with a one-year warranty after a professional inspection.

Promoting e-mobility and sustainability

The Vienna Climate Tour 2025 uses a fleet of eight electric cargo bikes to tour through the city. This mobile platform will provide information about topics such as recycling, repair and sustainable consumption. The city of Vienna has reduced energy consumption per capita by 33.7 percent since 2005 and is increasingly relying on e-mobility and environmentally friendly materials on this tour. The deployments take place in public places, in parks and during various events in the city.

As part of the EU strategy to promote the circular economy, the need for sustainable procurement of raw materials is also addressed. The COVID-19 pandemic placed a heavy burden on production processes. In order to reduce the EU's dependence on a few third countries, a law on critical raw materials was passed in December 2023. The new strategy supports initiatives against planned obsolescence and aims to improve the durability and repairability of products. Consumer rights are strengthened through the right to repair, which is an important measure to promote the circular economy.

Future vision of the circular economy

A central component of the EU strategy is the introduction of digital product passports, which are intended to provide relevant information along the product life cycle. This measure is intended to help consumers make informed decisions and thus increase the sustainability of products. The Vienna Climate Roadmap will be used as a guide during the climate tour in order to involve citizens even more in the topics of environmental protection and resource conservation.

For further information about the climate tour, the details are available on the official website of the City of Vienna, which offers interested citizens the opportunity to find out about the various stops and topics of the tour. The plan is for the tour to leave a lasting impression and pave the way for more responsible use of resources.
