Dispute between Romanians escalates: knives and punches in Timisoara!
A heated debate over marriage and the rights of gay couples is heating up in Romania. A high-profile poster in Timișoara warning families of the threat of adoption by same-sex couples has been removed at the mayor's personal request. The mood in the country is tense, and the upcoming referendum has been passionately discussed for weeks, especially among families and circles of friends. On October 6th and 7th, Romanians will have the opportunity to vote on whether the concept of marriage should be defined in the constitution as a “union between a man and a woman”. This initiative was pushed forward by conservative groups that came together to form the “Coalition for the Family” through a signature collection marathon of three million votes, such as DW reported.
Conflicts and reactions
Among the worrying incidents is a brutal argument between two compatriots that ended in a physical altercation. The 47-year-old threatened the 35-year-old with a knife after they had previously insulted each other violently. Both men sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention. Both are now being prosecuted legally ORF Carinthia reported. This highlights how tense and emotionally charged the climate in Romania is, particularly when it comes to issues surrounding homosexuality and family structures.
The controversies surrounding the referendum are dividing society. As the Orthodox Church urges its faithful to vote for the law, the LGBT community has faced a wave of threats and attacks. Critics of the referendum see it as a distraction from other problems in the country, while political scientist Armand Gosu emphasizes that it could also be due to distancing itself from the EU and a move towards an anti-Western stance. The upcoming elections are therefore not only a referendum on same-sex marriage, but also a crucial moment for Romania's political direction.
