Iran confirms ceasefire - rocket attacks on Israel continue!

On June 24, 2025, a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Iran is announced. US President Donald Trump and Iranian state media officially confirm this agreement. Despite this announcement, Iranian forces fired rockets at Israel again early Tuesday morning. Sirens sounded in several regions and Israeli air defenses intervened. The incident in Be'er Sheva, where a rocket hit a residential building, is particularly tragic. There are seven dead and several injured.

At the same time, several heavy explosions were heard in Tehran, considered the most violent since the conflict began on June 13. The Israeli army then issues evacuation calls for two districts in Tehran and warns of further air strikes. Speaking on Truth Social, Trump describes the ceasefire as “complete and absolute.” He explains that Iran should first cease weapons for 12 hours, followed by Israel for the same period. After a total of 24 hours there should be a complete cessation of fighting.

Conflicting signals from Tehran

Despite the announcements, the signals from Tehran are contradictory. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi initially states that there is no agreement on a ceasefire, but state broadcaster confirms the agreement. Araghchi later said that Iran would stop its attacks if Israel ended its military activities by 4 a.m. Tuesday morning. According to reports from the Israeli military, rocket fire from Iran is said to continue.

Heavy shelling is reported in some areas of Israel and at least one rocket is intercepted over Jerusalem. Earlier reports from the Israeli emergency service Magen David Adom reported at least three dead and eight injured. So far, nothing is known about the Israeli government's official statement on Trump's ceasefire announcement.

Context of the conflict

The current escalation is part of a long-running conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups, which also includes Hamas in the Gaza Strip. There have been several wars over the years. The latest fighting began in Ramadan, sparked by clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in Jerusalem. These tensions were further fueled by the threat of forced evictions in Sheikh Jarrah. Palestinian militants describe their rocket attacks as a response to Israeli aggression, particularly on Jerusalem Day, which commemorates the 1967 capture of eastern Jerusalem.

The EU and the USA strongly condemned the rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip. The Temple Mount, a holy site for Jews and Muslims, remains a central point of contention in the Middle East conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that it could be a longer conflict. The "Iron Dome", Israel's air defense system, successfully intercepted many of the incoming missiles, thus preventing further damage and casualties.

Developments in this conflict remain tense and uncertain. Compliance with the ceasefire could determine the further course of violence and the stability of the region.
