EVP plans to change course: Is the end of the combustion ban coming?

The pressure for the future ban on combustion engines in the EU is growing: Mag. Roman Haider from the FPÖ is calling for an immediate exit from this “unfortunate” regulation. According to Haider, the ban has brought the European automotive industry to the brink of collapse and the associated emissions-cutting measures are of little significance globally. “The massive problems facing European car manufacturers are largely of their own making,” complains Haider, and also points out that the EU’s high energy prices and strict emissions regulations are putting a heavy burden on business. According to OTS The announced ban even leads to overproduction of electric cars, which are hardly sold on the market.

EVP suggests easing measures

Amid these controversies, the European People's Party (EPP) would like to weaken the planned ban on combustion engines. In a new position paper, the EPP calls for the ban on the sale of CO2-emitting cars to be lifted from 2035. In the future, vehicles powered by biofuels and alternative fuels should also be allowed to remain on the market. This request comes at a critical time as the European automotive industry is under pressure, particularly from weak electric vehicle sales and competition from China The press reported.

Additionally, the EPP proposes to postpone the CO2 limits for 2025 and consider a more lenient compliance calculation for car manufacturers. These proposals could allow the automotive industry to better adapt to the challenges ahead and alleviate the existing problems in the sales sector. A way out of the current situation is needed, and both sides of the debate seem to realize that change is necessary.
