EU leaders assure Kyiv of wartime support
The situation in Ukraine is becoming increasingly critical. The EU's new foreign policy leaders, António Costa and Kaja Kallas, have visited Kyiv to reiterate support. The visit took place just hours after she took office, as Krone.at reported. Costa, the former Portuguese prime minister, said: “We stand behind Ukraine and continue our full support for Ukraine.” The talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky focused on the tragic developments on the front and Ukraine's future planned integration into the EU.
Amid these visits came a devastating Russian drone attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, leaving at least three people dead and seven others injured, according to the local governor. The attacks were primarily aimed at public infrastructure, such as Tagesschau.de reported. The Ukrainian Air Force was able to intercept 32 drones out of a total of 78 during the night, but the threat remains high. Kiev was also attacked early in the morning, where air defenses were able to fend off numerous drones, but several parts of the city were hit.
Political signals from Kyiv
The EU representatives' visit comes at a critical phase, while Russian troops are making significant gains in terrain on the Eastern Front. Kaja Kallas stressed that it is crucial for Ukraine to show that Europe is united behind it, calling the current situation on the battlefield “very, very serious.” But uncertainty about future support from the US, particularly under incoming President Donald Trump, remains worrying. Costa and Kallas agree that a possible reduction in American aid would require a dramatic increase in European military aid to Ukraine to ensure the defense against the Russians.
