EU regulation: Apple is changing iPhone models because of USB-C!
On December 28, 2024, a significant change in EU law came into force affecting all smartphones and electronic devices. From this date, devices in the EU must be equipped with a USB-C port to reduce electronic waste and increase compatibility. Apple was forced to stop selling its iPhone 14 and iPhone SE 3 models, which are still equipped with the outdated Lightning connector. This measure applies not only to Austria, but to all EU states as well 5min.at reported.
The pressure is growing
Apple, which resisted the introduction of the uniform standard for a long time, now has to adapt its devices. The latest measures have far-reaching significance as all new Apple devices, including future iPhones, tablets and accessories, will now have to be equipped with a USB-C port. These new EU requirements could even influence sales figures in the next few years, because the current Lightning devices will no longer be available in stores for laptops from the end of 2025, as reported by Everphone was noted.
In countries outside the EU, such as Great Britain, Lightning devices can continue to be sold until the end of 2025. This allows Apple to destock these old devices while EU customers already have to switch to the new USB-C models. Apple also plans to launch a new iPhone SE with USB-C in early 2025, which will be used as a transition model until the next iPhone generation. The switch to USB-C, although introduced gradually, could permanently change users' habits and end the long discussions about charging ports.
