Mountain rescue in action: Two boys rescued in Tscheppaschlucht!
On August 11, 2025, mountain rescue was requested twice in the Ferlach region. First, two boys left their parents unobserved in the Tscheppa Gorge and continued hiking alone. They, concerned for the well-being of their children, immediately alerted the police. The emergency services, including the Ferlach police, systematically searched the area. Several search teams were mobilized to quickly secure the area. Fortunately, the two boys were found unharmed shortly before “German Peter” and were handed over to their relieved parents, reports Klick Kärnten.
The Ferlach mountain rescue service had already received an emergency call regarding the Koschutnitz tower on August 10th. A caller noticed lights moving slowly down the valley and feared people were in distress. On site, the mountain rescuers met three uninjured people who had started a mountain tour late. They were safely escorted back to the valley.
Rescue operations in the Bavarian Alps
A similar incident occurred on June 22, 2025 in Bad Reichenhall, where the mountain rescue service had to rescue two Romanians aged 24 and 26 from a mountain. They had lost the marked path on the Hochstaufen-Goldtropfsteig and were blocked, exhausted. An emergency call was made at 3:15 p.m. The Bad Reichenhall and Freilassing mountain rescue teams were immediately alerted, while the rescue helicopter “Christoph 14” rushed to help directly from a previous mission in Berchtesgaden. Two mountain rescuers were flown to the scene, where both men were ultimately transported away. The operation lasted until around 4:45 p.m., according to Merkur.
These missions highlight the importance of safety precautions when mountaineering. It is crucial to remain alert at all times and not to lose sight of the route.
Emergency numbers in European countries
In emergency situations, mountain athletes in the EU can use the emergency number 112, which is free of charge and immediately connects you with emergency services, the fire department or the police. In order to get help quickly in the mountains, it is also helpful to find out about specific emergency numbers that apply in different countries. In Germany, Austria and Italy this is 112, while in Switzerland special numbers such as 1414 can be used for Alpine rescue, as the Alpenverein explains. If there are reception problems, it can also be helpful to restart your cell phone so that you can make the emergency call without a PIN.
