WEF boss Brende sounds the alarm: AI and crypto bubbles are looming!
Børge Brende, head of the World Economic Forum (WEF), urgently warns of a potential bubble in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrencies. A recent WEF report estimated that around $500 billion (equivalent to €433 billion) would be invested in AI in 2025, but Brende raises concerns that these large investments have so far shown little return. He describes the current economy as resilient, despite ongoing geopolitical crises.
A central theme of Brende's warnings is that heavy investments in technologies like AI are no guarantee of future profits. While he sees opportunities created by new technologies such as AI or synthetic biology in areas such as medicine and energy, he is also concerned about the geopolitical disorder, particularly the tensions between China and the US, which he identifies as the main conflicts of the future.
Geopolitical challenges
The rivalry between the US and China is described by Brende as a competition for technological dominance, underpinned by mutual high tariffs on imports. Given these tensions, he predicts that global problems such as cybercrime and pandemics can only be solved through joint efforts. He also warns that the need for an investment-friendly environment is crucial to ensuring that new technologies benefit everyone.
Brende sees possible productivity increases of around 10 percent in the next decade if technology is given the necessary support. However, he remains skeptical about the current investment situation and the decline in global investment.
Upcoming WEF annual conference
In January 2026, the WEF will hold its annual conference in Davos, with thousands of participants expected, including heads of state and government and CEOs of major global corporations. This meeting could provide a platform to address the concerns discussed and discuss approaches to solving global challenges.
On a completely different note, YouTube recently announced a new music education series called “Think Like a Musician.” This series is a collaboration between TED-Ed, Education Through Music, and professional artists to provide high-quality resources for teachers worldwide. A survey shows that 94% of teachers use YouTube to support their lesson plans, highlighting the importance of the platform in education.
New educational resources include comprehensive lesson plans and assessment matrices delivered through the YouTube Player for Education, a distraction-free tool. For teachers, this provides an opportunity to incorporate interactive experiences to promote student participation.
Like Brende, the YouTube survey highlights that 92% of viewers in the US use the platform to get information. These two topics, the economic dynamics of AI and the larger role of YouTube in the education sector, reflect the urgent need to find contemporary and flexible solutions to the challenges of the future.
