Jecki the wallaby: rescued after a spectacular hunt in East Tyrol!
In East Tyrol, a small wallaby known as Jecki was captured after a thrilling three-hour chase. The incident occurred on September 8, 2025 in Debant after Jecki had been missing since mid-August. The animal had escaped from its surroundings along with another wallaby, while the second wallaby was quickly brought back. Jecki, on the other hand, caused quite a stir in the region as the capture operation lasted several weeks during which numerous rescue attempts were made.
On Sunday, at 10:00 a.m., Jecki was spotted in a garden in Debant. The police, volunteers and the owner then immediately alerted the emergency services. Despite his small stature, Jecki showed a lot of energy and bounced around tirelessly, even after a veterinarian hit him with a tranquilizer gun. The chase lasted until 12:45 p.m. until the helpers finally managed to secure Jecki. There was great relief as it was feared that Jecki would not survive the winter in the wild.
Appropriate return
After his capture, it was decided to temporarily return Jecki to his peers in the farm of origin. There we wait for its integration until a species-appropriate enclosure is completed in East Tyrol. This measure is not only important for Jecki's well-being, but also shows the effort to promote animal welfare in the region.
Jecki's case is part of a larger discussion about animal protection and the well-being of wild animals. The EU has taken measures to protect wild animals and their habitats. Among other things, the Birds Directive and the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive come into force, which ensure the conservation of rare and threatened species. In addition, the EU Pollinator Initiative was launched to combat the decline of certain species, particularly pollinators such as bees. Such initiatives underline the importance of strict animal protection, which also aims to restore natural habitats.
The capture of Jecki can therefore be seen as a positive example of how to deal with wild animals, which is in line with EU regulations on animal protection and animal welfare. The hope is that such stories will help raise awareness of the responsibility humans have towards animals and their environment.
