Geothermal energy in western Romania drastically reduces heating costs. New projects aim to cover 100% of heating requirements.

Geothermal revolution: Western Romania has the cheapest heating costs!

In a small town in western Romania with just under 10,000 inhabitants, residents can benefit from the lowest heating costs in the country. This is the result of a successful district heating system that provides efficient heat to large parts of the city. The heating method is based on the use of geothermal resources, in which hot water is pumped into the distribution network from a depth of 2.5 kilometers at temperatures of 85 °C. Ökonews reports, that the geothermal coverage of the system heat requirement is already 70%.

The city's district heating system is not only ecologically sustainable, but also independent of the weather. This ensures a reliable energy supply, especially in winter, and closes any gaps in energy requirements. In view of the positive development, a new follow-up project is being planned, which will be supported with expertise from Iceland and Norway. The aim of this project is to cover 100% of the city's heating needs with geothermal energy in the future.

Growing use of geothermal energy in Romania

Commitment to the use of geothermal energy in Romania is increasing. In addition to the small town, there are also various projects in Bucharest that aim to intensify the use of renewable energy from geothermal sources. These developments show that Romania is striving to increasingly cover its heating needs through sustainable energy.

At a time when many countries are looking for ways to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, geothermal energy in Romania represents a promising alternative. Additional material on the progress in geothermal energy use in Romania can be found in a presentation that provides further insights and data.
