Whirlwind 3 x 21: A network for a self-determined life with Down syndrome

World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on March 21, 2025, a date intended to raise awareness of the special characteristics of people with trisomy 21. This day, celebrated since 2006, highlights the characteristic feature: the triple presence of the 21st chromosome. As the Down Syndrome Germany Working Group e. V. reports, there are also increasing calls for the term “trisomy 21” to be used in order to reduce outdated ideas about Down syndrome and promote acceptance in society.

It is estimated that around 9,000 people with Down syndrome live in Austria. The Burgenland-Styrian association “Whirlwind 3 x 21”, founded by mothers of affected children, has been offering support and information for ten years. The founding members Sabine Pomper and Monika Prenner share their experiences and offer a contact point for parents who are often confronted with uncertainties and questions, especially regarding educational and leisure opportunities for their children. “Exchange within the group is crucial in order to obtain the necessary information,” says Pomper.

Support for those affected

Another goal of “Whirlwind 3 x 21” is to change the image of children with Down syndrome. Monika Prenner explains that many expectant mothers are still confronted with outdated ideas during their pregnancy. “We want to show that life with our children is completely normal,” she says. The association organizes meetings and can be reached by parents both online and by telephone.
