From prisoner to fighter: Kevin Lick and his way out of isolation

The year 2024 brought formative stories in the Westerwald. Particularly highlighted was the case of 19-year-old Kevin Lick, who made headlines after his conviction for treason in Russia. Kevin Lick was born in Montabaur and moved to Russia with his mother, where he was persecuted because of his critical attitude towards the government and the militarization of youth.

He spent a total of 17 months in Russian prisons and penal camps before being released on August 1, 2023 as part of a prisoner exchange between Russia and the West. He was previously arrested by suspected FSB forces on February 22, 2023. His trial took place in camera in October 2023, and Lick was sentenced to four years in prison for treason. During his time in prison, he was held in solitary confinement and forced to do forced labor in a labor camp in Arkhangelsk, as the Swabian newspaper reported.

Return and commitment

After his return to Germany, Lick was received by Chancellor Olaf Scholz at Cologne-Bonn Airport. At an SPD event in Schweinfurt, he reported on his experiences and emphasized the importance of democracy and the dangers of authoritarian governments. Lick is now attending the eleventh grade at the Würzburger Röntgen-Gymnasium and is involved in the student parliament. His goal is to graduate from high school and work for political prisoners in Russia.

Reflecting on the year 2024 in the Westerwald not only highlights Lick, but also various events and personalities that have shaped the region. Traditionally there is a review at the turn of the year, which this time is divided into thematic categories such as people, events, blue lights, culture, politics and economics Rhine newspaper reported.
