Vesperkirche in Lüneburg: Free tattoos, haircuts and community!

Lüneburg. An exciting event is coming! From November 12th to 14th, St. Michael's Church opens its doors to the spectacular Vesper Church, where rich and poor meet - and all for free! Get tattoos, haircuts, new clothes and delicious food all in one place. But will this colorful mix really work?

Markus Bahr, a Lüneburg resident who lives in the Plus hostel, is thrilled: "I've already gotten a tattoo here. It's a protected space and the food is good too." The pastor and co-organizer Silke Ideker confirms that the Vesperkirche is a place of encounter. "People often stand in line, especially at the Arabic buffet. Ladies with pearl necklaces sit next to men from the hostel and enjoy the food together." It becomes clear here that need is often not apparent at first glance. Seniors who cannot afford a haircut can also find help here.

Lonely people find company

The Vesperkirche is not only a place for those in need, but also for lonely people. "We have a feedback wall on which many wrote that they have to eat alone at home. Here they enjoy the company," says Ideker. Last year, 300 meals were served on each of the four days, and similar numbers are expected this year. "Friendships don't happen often, but people meet and talk to each other. That's worth a lot," she adds.

Hairdressing moments and entertainment

Another highlight are the hairdressers who give visitors a new look. “People enjoy the attention,” says Ideker. The spaces are designed so that everyone has their own hairdressing moment. In addition to haircuts, visitors can also get earrings pierced, choose Christmas decorations or play table tennis. In the evenings, acrobat Marlene Kiepke provides entertainment, while live music from all eras and genres can be heard. Markus Bahr can only recommend visiting the Vesperkirche: "It's good for meeting people. It works there."
