Tragedy in Bolzano: Two premature babies die of bacterial infection!

On August 14, 2025, a tragic situation occurred in the Bolzano State Hospital, South Tyrol. Two “extremely premature babies”, who were around three weeks old and weighed 700 grams each, died as a resultBacterial infection. The babies were sick with the bacterium Serratia marcescens, which is widespread in the environment and is usually harmless to healthy people. The public prosecutor's office immediately launched an investigation to check compliance with medical protocols and possible hygienic deficiencies after the infection was detected. The bodies of the deceased premature babies should be frozen and stored for a possible autopsy. In view of the incidents, all preventive measures were applied at the Bolzano Hospital.

Changes in patient intake

In order to prevent further risks, no further high-risk births have been recorded in Bolzano for the time being. The premature babies already there will be transferred to the hospital in Trento. The neonatal intensive care unit will also be relocated to the old intensive care unit to minimize the risk of further infections. State Health Councilor Hubert Messner and other responsible persons expressed their condolences to the relatives of the deceased.
