Drama in Zwickau: FC Carl Zeiss Jena secures a late point!
Zwickau.A thrilling duel in the regional football league ended with a fair 1-1 draw between FC Carl Zeiss Jena and FSV Zwickau on Sunday. Host Zwickau and the guests from Jena had to settle for one point in the end, although the game was exciting until the last second for 8,139 spectators.
The first half was characterized by a strong performance from Jena, which was praised by coach Henning Bürger and Joel Richter. Richter self-critically noted that the Jena team should have acted “more determinedly” despite good chances to score. The highlight of the first half was Erik Weinhauer's header goal in the 33rd minute, which secured the 1-0 win for Jena and ended its goal drought that had lasted since the 5-1 win against Rot-Weiß Erfurt. A truly gratifying moment for FC Carl Zeiss!
Shock in the second half
But then came the second half, in which FC Carl Zeiss Jena seemed like a substitute. Zwickau pushed non-stop for the equalizer, and Jena keeper Marius Liesegang became the absolute hero on the pitch, saving with several brilliant saves. As coach Bürger noted in frustration, “we couldn't do anything about it in terms of game play” and the offense was almost non-existent. Citizen continued his efforts until he received a yellow card, which further inflamed the situation.
In a dramatic moment, ex-Jena player Marc-Philipp Zimmermann scored with a “rocket header” from a corner in the 66th minute, which leveled the game at 1-1. Richter saw red: “This can’t happen to us, we were warned.” Despite offensive weaknesses and the worrying injury of Richter, who was no longer able to stand on the field, Jena managed to avert the impending defeat. Citizens and judges are now looking optimistically at the next game against bottom team Luckenwalde and are demanding a win to leave the last two faces in Zwickau behind them.
