City treasurers and workshop employees swap places in Haldensleben!

A special day of action took place in Haldensleben, known as “shift change” and aimed at breaking down prejudices. Around 4,200 people took part in this initiative, including more than 2,400 employees with disabilities who swapped their jobs for a day. In the city of Haldensleben, two people were also able to take on new roles.

The city treasurer Michael Schneiderwind and the workshop employee Maik Dube from Lebenshilfe Ostfalen swapped places. Whileschneidewind lent a hand in the carpentry workshop and made wooden bodies called casani, Dube accompanied the deputy mayor Oliver Karte in the town hall. The aim of this campaign is to gain insights into different work realities and to create mutual understanding. In this case, both participants experienced an educational day that was all about sharing and respecting each other's work.

Experiences of the participants

The morning was exciting for both sides. Michaelschneidewind carried out various activities in the carpentry workshop: he planed, sanded, glued and cut the beech wood. “I am very impressed by the workshop structures, the working atmosphere and the variety of different work orders here,” admitted the treasurer after the work was done.

Maik Dube, on the other hand, had a lot to do in the town hall. Meetings were on the agenda, mail had to be looked through and Oliver Karte was required to explain all the tasks and answer questions. A highlight of the day was a visit where Karte and Dube congratulated a Haldensleb couple on their diamond wedding. Maik Dube was thrilled by the insights he received at the town hall: “The day was very exciting, but I prefer building my casani,” said the 47-year-old with a shy smile, showing his preference for workshop work.

This job swap initiative allowed the two men to gain a better understanding of the realities of both jobs. It became clear how important it is to exchange experiences and perspectives in order to reduce prejudices and promote mutual understanding. The day of action could therefore make a small but significant contribution to a more inclusive coexistence, as you can on www.volksstimme.de can read.
