Language camp in the forest: Children discover German and nature while having fun!

In an exciting adventure, around 30 students from the Südschule and the Burgschule spent their autumn holidays in the forest! The 18th municipal language camp, which took place in cooperation with the Forest Education Center in the Märkisches Kreis, offered children from Syria, Turkey, Bulgaria, Poland and Ukraine a unique opportunity to learn the German language in nature. Here, where the trees whisper and the meadows bloom, learning became an experience!

Amid the green backdrop, the children built “forest sofas” and “living rooms” while exploring nature with all their senses. With creative workshops and exciting activities such as making binoculars and forest harps, not only were new German words collected, but friendships were also made. “Can toadstools fly?” asked a curious child, causing smiles among the carers. The motto “making language come alive” came to life here, and the progress was impressive – a boy from Ukraine started speaking German in the second week!

An unforgettable experience

The camp, which took place for the 12th time this year, was sponsored by the Gertrud Wichelhoven Foundation and supported by the new head of the forest school, Samuel Schröder. The children were treated to a warm lunch every day from Krug Catering in Letmathe. Under the expert guidance of Jana Marek and her dedicated team, consisting of Maria Gandul, Alin Geitmann-Rompza, Krista Krampe and Giuliana Li Bergolis, the children experienced an unforgettable time outdoors.

On Friday, October 25th, the ten-day language camp ended with a ceremonial handover of the certificates and forest booklets. These booklets are not only collections of their experiences, but also valuable opportunities for conversation that help the children consolidate their language skills and share their experiences with their families. An adventure that will stay with the children for a long time!
