On December 19, 2024 at around 10:35 a.m., a tragic traffic accident occurred on the B71 between Wehldorf and Brüttendorf in which two cars collided head-on. The 80-year-old driver of a Skoda, who was traveling with his wife, wanted to overtake a vehicle in front, but overlooked the oncoming BMW of a 70-year-old, which led to this serious collision. According to the official reports published by nachrichten-heute.net it was a serious accident with tragic injuries.
The emergency response was immediate. The organizational head of the rescue service, who happened to pass the scene of the accident, immediately informed the fire department and rescue service control centers. The fire brigades from Zeven, Gyhum and Sottrum as well as several rescue vehicles and emergency doctors were dispatched to the scene of the accident in a very short time. A total of three occupants were freed from the vehicles using hydraulic rescue equipment. The situation was critical: the BMW driver died from his serious injuries on the way to the hospital. The passenger of the Skoda also suffered life-threatening injuries and later died in hospital. The person who caused the accident was seriously injured and taken to hospital. The B71 had to remain closed until late afternoon for the accident investigation and clean-up work.
