On Sunday, July 20, 2025, there was a serious traffic accident on the L405 (Vorauerstrasse) in the municipality of Vorau. A 65-year-old car driver from the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district wanted to turn left onto Rechbergweg and overlooked the oncoming motorcyclist, a 26-year-old man from the Oberwart district in Burgenland. The motorcycle driver was noticed too late, so both road users tried to initiate emergency braking.

The sudden stop caused the motorcyclist to skid and ultimately collided with the car. The force of the collision was so strong that both the motorcycle and the driver were thrown into a ditch. The 26-year-old suffered serious injuries to his shoulder and required immediate medical attention.

First aid at the scene of an accident

The biker's companions reacted quickly and immediately provided first aid, as recommended in the ADAC guidelines. In his advice on first aid in motorcycle accidents, he emphasizes that it is crucial to act quickly as a first aider and to check the victim's ability to react. Since the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, care was also taken to remove it carefully to avoid possible further injuries.

The Vorau Red Cross and an emergency doctor arrived and treated the seriously injured man. He was then transported to the Oberwart Clinic. An alcohol test for the driver of the car was negative and the L405 was briefly closed while the accident was being recorded, which led to traffic delays.

Safety risks and accident statistics

Unfortunately, accidents like this are not isolated cases, as motorcyclists have a higher risk of accidents than drivers. According to an analysis of ADAC accident data, the risk of being involved in an accident as a motorcyclist is four times higher than that of a car driver. In addition, common vehicle concepts such as crumple zones and seat belts are not available on motorcycles, which significantly increases the risk of injury.

Every year in Germany there are more than 500 fatal and almost 10,000 seriously injured motorcyclists. Young drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 are particularly at risk, as they have the highest average accident rate. A significant proportion of these accidents occur as a result of collisions, with overtaking errors and inappropriate speed being common causes.

To improve the safety of motorcyclists, it is recommended to use protective clothing, regular safety checks and driver safety training. Preventive measures, such as cutting back vegetation on roads or putting up better signs, could also help reduce the risk of accidents.

The situation of the 26-year-old motorcyclist illustrates the dangers in road traffic and the need for quick first aid measures. It remains to be hoped that he can fully recover from the injuries he sustained.
