Climate glue in court: Paint attack on private jet in Itzehoe!
A dramatic trial has begun: Six members of the controversial protest group “Last Generation” are on trial in Itzehoe after they daubed a private jet on the North Sea island of Sylt with orange paint. This suspected paint attack could be the most expensive of its kind, with damage estimated at around one million euros. The defendants, including three women and three men between the ages of 22 and 61, are also said to have damaged the jet's engines and stuck themselves to the wings during the attack. With their banners emblazoned with provocative slogans such as “Your Luxury – Our Drought,” they caused a temporary restriction on air traffic.
Serious accusations and high penalties
The public prosecutor's office accuses the defendants of not only disrupting public operations and damaging property, but also trespassing. They are also said to have dug holes on a golf course on Sylt and planted a tree. The crimes took place in June of the previous year. Penalties could include up to two years in prison or hefty fines. The verdict is expected on Friday and the hearings will take place at the China Logistic Center Itzehoe, where there are strict security controls, due to a lack of space.
Protest and legal action
The “Last Generation” is planning a vigil before the trial begins and another action on Saturday. Unlike previous proceedings, the defendants rely on the defense of experienced lawyers. There are also separate investigations against a 32-year-old activist because of her possible involvement in a criminal organization. These incidents, including further paint attacks on the Hotel Miramar and shops in Kampen, are being dealt with in separate proceedings. The protest group polarizes society: while some support them, others vehemently reject their methods.
