Traffic chaos in Central Saxony: Where it is now and why!

There is currently very tense traffic in Central Saxony, as the current traffic jam warning shows. Drivers on the A4, A14 and A72 motorways as well as the federal highways B107, B169, B175 and other important connections must be prepared for significant delays. This current information is provided by the traffic jam warning, which works in cooperation with the “TomTom” service to provide precise traffic information using GPS data from millions of mobile devices and road sensors, such as Sächsische.de reports.

Investments in transport infrastructure

In order to provide travel information promptly and effectively, the Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (ZVMS) is investing around 12 million euros in the “Integrated Traffic Management: ITCS Mittelsachsen” project by 2020. The Free State of Saxony will cover around 8.9 million euros, which corresponds to 75 percent of the recognized costs. State Secretary Stefan Brangs recently handed over the first funding notice for 1.8 million euros to the VMS. The initiative aims to make local public transport future-proof through modern systems and apps Media Service Saxony notes.

As part of this project, a digital operations control system will be purchased for regional traffic and for Zwickau city traffic. The plan is to integrate new on-board computers that, among other things, enable cashless payments. These measures should be fully operational by the beginning of 2020 and ensure real-time information for all regional bus lines in the VMS as well as the Zwickau city transport lines. This not only shows passengers the departure times in real time, but also significantly improves the quality of service.
